Singapore, June 28, 2024 - Cyberlite, in collaboration with Microsoft, concluded the eagerly anticipated “Unlocking Generative AI: The 2024 Student Challenge” with a vibrant prize presentation ceremony held at Microsoft’s Singapore office. The event marked the culmination of a six-month journey of exploration, learning, and innovation for secondary students across Singapore.

A Journey of Discovery into Generative AI

Launched in January 2024, the challenge aimed to introduce secondary school students to the potentials and responsibilities of using generative AI. By engaging with Cyberlite and Microsoft’s Classroom Toolkit: Unlocking Generative AI Safely and Responsibly, students learned through the experiences of diverse characters Gina and Alex, who use generative AI in their careers. The challenge encouraged participants to consider both the opportunities and safety considerations AI presents.

Empowering Educators and Students

The initiative kicked off with an informative webinar for teachers, outlining the educational tools and learning objectives of the toolkit. This was followed by interactive workshops in six secondary schools, reaching over 750 students and educators. These sessions provided hands-on experience with generative AI tools, equipping students with the skills to navigate the complex landscape of safety and responsibility with AI application.

The Challenge Takes Shape

Students were tasked with creating characters that integrate AI into their professional and personal lives, mirroring the depth and narrative provided by Gina and Alex. Submissions required students to demonstrate not only their creativity but also their understanding of how AI could shape future professions ethically and effectively.

Celebrating Young Innovators

The challenge culminated in a prize presentation ceremony that gathered over 50 attendees, including notable figures from the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), Ministry of Education (MOE), and the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). The event featured inspiring keynote addresses from Courtney Gregoire, Microsoft’s Chief Digital Safety Officer, and Doreen Tan, IMDA’s Assistant Chief Executive.
